MARCH 31, ODLAR YURDU UNIVERSITY: CEREMONY WAS DEVOTED TO DAY OF GENOCIDE OF AZERBAIJANIS
31.03.2011
Information in brief about genocide of Azerbaijanis: According to the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan of 26 March 1998, every year on 31 March Azerbaijan commemorates the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. This year the people of Azerbaijan once again pay their respect to victims of massacres and ethnic cleansing conducted as a result of imperial policies in the region and waves of Armenian aggression.
Inspired by dreams of creating a “Greater Armenia”, Armenians, not even concealing their intentions, carried out a series of large-scale bloody actions against Azerbaijanis between 1905 and 1907.
The genocide of the Azerbaijanis was carried out with particular cruelty in Baku, Shemakha and Guba districts and the Karabakh, Zangazur, Nakhichevan, Lenkoran and other regions of Azerbaijan.
In 1919 and 1920 the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic observed 31 March as a national day of mourning.
The new territorial claims of Armenia towards Azerbaijan instigated by the leadership of USSR, at the end of 80s of the last century resulted in a large-scale war, occupation of 20 percent of territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Armenian military units, and be-coming refugees and internally displaced persons of about one million of Azerbaijanis.
In 1988 the remaining 200,000 Azerbaijanis were forcibly deported from their historical homelands within the present-day Armenian State. Killing and maiming accompanied the mass expulsion: 216 Azerbaijanis were killed during the ethnic cleansing in 1988-1989.
In February 1992, the Armenians committed unprecedented massacre of the population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly. The bloody tragedy, which became known as the Khojaly Genocide, resulted in extermination or capture of thousands of Azerbaijanis; the town was
razed to the ground. That tragic action by its scale and features is in full conformity with the notion of genocide defined by provisions set forth in the Convention “On Prevention and Punishment of Crime of Genocide” adopted by the UN General Assembly resolution 260 {III}
dated December 9,1948.

    Members of Azerbaijan Parliament Ahmad Valiyev and Ganira Pashayeva, well-known journalist Akif Ashirli, as well as university professors and staff, students were participated at the ceremony. Rector A.Valiyev opened the ceremony and said that: “Since Odlar Yurdu University establishment, the tradition of ceremonies related with the fate of the state of Azerbaijan continues. The purpose is to notice the truth about history of Azerbaijan to our youth in order they may notice it to a new generation”.
Vice-rector of the University, Doctor of Law, Prof. Samir Valiyev reported on a number of genocides happened in the world community. He also made a report of the correct information about the victims of the terrible genocide against Azerbaijanis and said that the rights of brutally killed our citizens still not recognized. World community recognizes the savageries of Armenia but unfortunately, it is still tolerated this injustice.

At the event was held the presentation of the book "Victims of genocide committed by Ar-menians - Baghanıs Ayrim".
Prof. Ahmad Valiyev said that this kind of book provides opportunity to get thoroughly acquainted with the history of Azerbaijan.
Co-author of the book, Ms. Ganira Pashayeva said that the March 31 is very hard date for Azerbaijan and more than 50 million Azerbaijanis living all over the world. During the 70 years of the Soviet Union we were not allowed distribute and promote our own history. Only after gaining independence at the beginning of the XX century, we can investigate, read and learn about genocides committed by Armenians against our people. Today, the presentation of this book help us to inform our youth become more informed in this field ", - Pashayeva said.
Chief Editor of the "Sharg" newspaper and co-author of the book "Victims of genocide committed by Armenians - Baghanıs Ayrim" Akif Ashirli reported that this book has been published in previous years in Azerbaijan and later, after translation into English, this book was held in many European countries. "Genocide is become genocide when it is committed against civilian and unarmed people. The first martyr village of Azerbaijan is Baghanıs Ayrim and the road to Khojali began from Baghanıs ", - said Ashirli.
